Historian David Olusoga will be discussing his book, Black and British. First published in 2016, Black and British re-examines our understanding of British history, telling the rich and revealing story of the long relationship between the British Isles and the people of Africa and the Caribbean.
Drawing on genealogical research, original records and expert testimony, Black and British reaches back to Roman Britain, the medieval imagination, Elizabethan ‘blackamoors’ and the global slave-trading empire. It describes how that the great industrial boom of the nineteenth century was built on American slavery, as well as the Black Britons fought at Trafalgar and in the trenches of both World Wars.
Within the context of recent civil rights movements, David will discuss just how far our understanding of British history has changed in the years since the book's initial publication and explore what we have learned in the process.
David will be interviewed by Nadim Meer, Partner and Head of the Private Equity group and co-lead of Mishcon M:BRACE.
