Paul Clements-Hunt recently sat down with The Lawyer to discuss Mishcon Purpose, the firm's specialist sustainability business, and the shifting ESG landscape.
Topics covered in the interview included the difficulty in navigating ever-changing sustainability issues and additional risks posed by climate change to businesses – such as claims of greenwashing and the associated reputational risk. Paul also spoke about the efforts of Mishcon Purpose to actively help companies achieve sustainability goals such as reaching net zero (for example, by evaluating global value chains), and the Greener Litigation Pledge, an initiative to reduce the environmental impact of dispute resolution, which is led by the firm.
Paul commented: “What we are seeing in Mishcon Purpose at this point in time are complex converging systemic risks creating new risks. In fact, the whole nature of risk is changing on a crowded, warming planet. This promotes both threats and new market opportunities. In climate we know that there is a commitment from companies to achieving sustainability goals like reaching net zero; many of them just don’t have the architecture to deliver it. This is something we can work with companies to develop.”
