David Rose, Partner and Head of Patents, and Jeremy Hertzog, Partner Chair of the Innovation department, shared their insights with Law360 on the essential skills for intellectual property lawyers, the impact of artificial intelligence on the IP sector and the developments surrounding Europe's new patent court.
Discussing the skills that clients look for in intellectual property lawyers, Jeremy commented: "You need an inquiring mind. I think you need to be able to want to delve deeply into understanding the antecedents of a dispute and understand the subject. But you also need to know when to stop and say, 'Enough is enough.' There's emotional intelligence to know when to stop, and then there is the emotional intelligence to understand what the client is telling you they want."
On trends in the intellectual property space in 2024, David said: "There's been a new IP court this year — the Unified Patent Court — and that's been a really interesting development. It's been interesting to see how UK-based law firms have sought to engage or not engage."
