Partner Ben Brandon spoke with Times Radio to provide an update on efforts by the Ukraine Justice Alliance to support Ukrainians.
During the interview, Ben discussed the principles that the Alliance has put forward and the role all governments can play in enacting new laws to deliver help to Ukraine and its people.
Ben commented: “Sanctions in the UK, US and EU have led to the freezing of hundreds of billions of assets owned by assets and Russian state enterprises. At the moment, there is no legal framework for converting or repurposing assets frozen pursuant to the sanction measures in order to meet Ukraine’s legitimate claims for the damage it suffers as a consequence of Russia’s illegal war. There are all sorts of precedents and examples that we can find in our own law and in the law of other jurisdictions and indeed in international law that can help us find a solution to this particular problem. In a nutshell, what we need is new law.”
