Over twenty community, children’s and legal organisations, including Mishcon de Reya, have joined a call to amend the Nationality and Borders Bill to remove unjust fees from the citizenship registration process.
The Project for the Registration of Children as British Citizens has complied a joint briefing on citizenship registration fees, which proposes an amendment to the Nationality and Borders Bill that would scrap these fees.
The Bill is due to be debated by the House of Lords on 8 March 2022.
Only £372 of the current £1,000+ registration fee is actually required in processing the right of registration, while the remaining amount is collected by the Home Office as profit.
