22 April is Earth Day, marking the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970 and setting out a day of action to change human behaviour and work to stop the climate crisis.
This year’s theme is ‘Invest in our planet’
Over the last year, we’ve continued to deliver on our commitments set out in our Climate Change Strategy, as well as advocated for broader climate action through our work.
In November 2021, we attended COP 26, the 2021 United Nations climate change conference, to highlight the impact that the law can have on tackling climate change, and the responsibility that we all have to take action. We presented several key initiatives, including the Global Youth Climate Inquiry in partnership with One Young World and the Democracy and Culture Foundation, the Greener Litigation Pledge, and more, all detailed here.
Last year on Earth Day 2021 we launched our Climate Migration Project, designed to raise awareness and provide impetus to the global conversation surrounding climate migration. The project involves exploring the intersection between climate change and its effect on displaced communities and patterns – and getting this firmly on the agenda for COP 26, at which the firm had a strong presence.
This year we also saw several new additions to the firm that have helped solidify our commitment to climate activism and sustainable change, including our new Policy Director Juan Costa Climent. Juan is the former Global Leader for Climate Change and Sustainability Services for EY and is an international thought leader in business and sustainability.
We also welcomed Corporate Partner Angeli Arora to the firm, who specialises in working with the investment community to put investments to good use, and deliver social and environmental benefits, rather than just financial. Impact Investing helps businesses to do good with their investments, especially with regard to climate change and the environment.
We have also continued our relationship with Giki Zero, which helps users estimate their carbon footprint and identify simple and achievable ways to reduce their impact on the planet.
