Emily Nicholson for Eco Chamber's podcast: God’s Own Dark Waters: Exposing a chemical scandal.

Posted on 5 March 2025

Mishcon Partner, Emily Nicholson acts for community organisation Cleaner Bentham and has been interviewed for a special edition of Eco Chamber's podcast: God’s Own Dark Waters: Exposing a chemical scandal.

ENDS Report journalist Pippa Neill is investigating a toxic scandal in Bentham, North Yorkshire town, and the PFAS pollution linked to firefighting foam producer, Angus Fire. In this first of a two-part podcast, Pippa and ECO Chamber's James Agyepong-Parsons explore the issue, featuring insights from a fire brigade whistleblower, affected residents, and lawyers.

Cleaner Bentham is fundraising to obtain blood testing for the local community, and Mishcon has engaged with Angus Fire to seek to establish historical treatment of this pervasive and bioaccumulative chemical. Emily says "We know from ENDS extensive reporting that there is a significant PFAs issue in Bentham.  Initial testing has been done which does indicate that there is PFAs contamination in the ground and water, and the community at the moment, and my client, are interested in understanding what this means for them and what their legal rights are."
