Nick West, Partner and Chief Strategy Officer, spoke to the Financial Times about the challenges around using AI in law firms for the FT’s Innovative Lawyers: Europe special report. Nick discussed the benefits and issues around safely using generative AI and large language models in an industry like the legal sector which needs to be able to rely on the technology it adopts: "You have to ask yourself the question, in an industry that doesn’t really tolerate defects, how good is this stuff, how do we safely use it, how much could it replace a human and how much does it augment one of our experts?"
Nick also talked about the threat to legal jobs but explained that he expects these new tools not to be so much of a threat to jobs and more of a help to lawyers. "There are loads of things that don’t get done because they’re not cost-effective such as reviewing all the service contracts of employees in an acquisition target, he says. Generative AI could do that work."
