Mishcon de Reya achieve positive outcome for the Hamud family

Posted on 17 March 2021

Mishcon de Reya assisted the Hamud family on a pro bono basis in raising concerns about the uniform rules at Uxbridge High School and the way in which it was applied to their daughter, Siham.  During December 2020, Siham was unable to attend school because her religious beliefs prohibited her from wearing trousers or a skirt of the length prescribed by the school.

Following written representations on behalf of the Hamud family and a complaints panel hearing, the school concluded that the family was justified in raising concerns and took the decision to accommodate Siham's right to practice her faith by wearing an ankle-length skirt in the same style as the school uniform. Uxbridge High School has also confirmed that it will not take any legal action against the Hamud family for the period that Siham was unable to attend school and have provided the Hamud family with a letter of apology.

Mishcon de Reya is proud to have assisted the Hamud family to reach a positive resolution with the school.

The team included Waqar Shah, Susannah Kintish, Rob Lewis, Hannah Capstick and Amani Alom.
