In this digital session co-hosted with PGIM Real Estate and GWN, our panel looked at themes from the award-winning LGBTQ+ documentary 'Changing the Game', and the wider issues around the role of transgender athletes in competitive sport.
'Changing the Game' is a compelling account of the hard-won victories by trans teenage athletes competing across America. This action-packed documentary reveals the lives of three major contenders in high-school wrestling, skiing and track sports who have been making headlines for their activism, victories in competition and the battles they face being publicly out.
Our panel discussed their own personal experiences competing as or working with trans athletes, along with broader issues including the support available for trans athletes and the challenges relating to the regulation of transgender participation in sport in the UK and internationally.
Moderated by Mishcon de Reya partner Maria Patsalos, our panel included:
- Jamie Hooper: Board member and Diversity & Inclusion Committee Chair, Federation of Gay Games
- Verity Smith: Trans rugby player and trans inclusion in sports youth worker for Mermaids UK
- Natalie Washington: Trans football player and campaign lead for Football v Transphobia
