Legal Director Johnny Kelly spoke with Property Week following the government consultation announcement of 27 December, which outlined proposals to help target illicit finance and corruption within the property sector. By lifting "the veil of secrecy currently afforded to land-holding trusts", the proposals aim to provide greater transparency about ultimate ownership.
Commenting on recent developments, Johnny explains “The House of Lords wanted to change the law last year to make all details of [property-owning] trusts available. The government said that the plans needed thinking through properly, so it promised a consultation, as long as the Lords dropped the issue. The government is just keeping that promise.”
