Following statutory amendments, in 2010 it became possible for same sex and unmarried couples to apply for Parental Orders. In 2019, single applicants could apply for Parental Orders (this followed a declaration of incompatibility with the Human Rights Act). However, same-sex, unmarried or single parent surrogacy is not universally permitted and anyone considering international surrogacy options should look carefully at the law in the relevant foreign jurisdiction.
