Mishcon de Reya provided pro bono legal advice to the Union of Jewish Students (UJS) and the Bristol Jewish Society (JSoc) in respect of all aspects of student complaints about the conduct of Professor David Miller, who was dismissed today by the University of Bristol.
Partner Adam Rose, who led a team that included head of education Robert Lewis and associate Shulamit Aberbach, together with deputy chairperson, Anthony Julius, for UJS and the JSoc, said:
"Having worked as a sabbatical officer for UJS in the 1980s, it is both hugely depressing still to be having to fight antisemitism on campuses in the UK today, and hugely satisfying to see the University of Bristol finally recognise that Professor Miller did not meet the standards of behaviour expected from university staff.
Our team helped the students with the legal strategy to reach this outcome, and we are very pleased to have worked to ensure that the line between academic freedom and hate speech has been recognised."
