Welcome to our fourth annual Serious Fraud Office (SFO) Enforcement review. In this review we look into the SFO's investigations into individuals and corporates during 2023. We then look ahead to 2024 and consider a number of topics, including what to expect from the SFO under the leadership of its new director, former assistant Metropolitan Police Commissioner Nick Ephgrave QPM, the trials that the SFO prosecuted over the year, new investigations opened by the SFO and what this tells us about the direction that the SFO might be headed in 2024.

SFO new investigations and prosecutions 2023

For the SFO, the year 2023 was largely a story of an organisation trying to turn a page. The flurry of activity around the departure of former Director Lisa Osofsky and the appointment of Nick Ephgrave QPM, gave a taste of what might be expected of the agency in the months to come.

Proceeds of crime investigations

The past year has seen some noteworthy results for the SFO in relation to confiscation and civil recovery orders. In some of the cases in which the SFO was involved, the individual concerned had either fled the jurisdiction or had already paid significant amounts towards a confiscation order.

Nick Ephgrave QPM, was a surprise appointment to the position of Director of the SFO when he was announced as Lisa Osofsky's successor in July 2023.
