Amanda Gray for LGT Private Banking on considerations for Art Donors and Museum Acceptance

Posted on 12 February 2025

Amanda Gray, Art Law Partner at Mishcon de Reya, spoke to LGT Private Banking about what potential art donors should consider as they make plans to give a piece of art, as well as the careful process museums undertake before accepting artwork donations to ensure the provenance of the artwork and its alignment with the institution's goals and policies.

She highlighted that museums must consider the artwork's fit within their collection and the cultural context, commenting: "People may think a museum is bound to want their artwork, but they have to make very careful decisions about what they acquire."

Amanda also explains that museums must verify the donor's legal ownership and assess any potential issues, such as the artwork's origin or the donor's reputation.
