Mishcon de Reya and Payne Hicks Beach launch divorce support resource

Posted on 21 March 2024

Mishcon de Reya has partnered with Payne Hicks Beach to introduce a new resource aimed at supporting and protecting vulnerable clients navigating the complexities of divorce and facing mental health challenges.

Sheena Cassidy Hope, a Partner and Knowledge lawyer at Mishcon de Reya, worked with Payne Hicks Beach and a team of other family lawyers, psychologists and psychiatrists to produce a comprehensive set of guides.

The 'Vulnerable Clients Guide for Legal Professionals' assists lawyers in recognising clients who may be struggling, facilitating open discussions, and providing targeted support. A guide aimed at 'Wellbeing for legal professionals when dealing with vulnerable clients' focuses on the importance of self-care, setting professional boundaries, and fostering a supportive network.

In addition, a 'Vulnerable Clients Survival Guide' details the psychological impacts of separation and offers strategies for managing stress and behavioural challenges. The 'Vulnerable clients escalation policy' will help firms respond appropriately as client vulnerabilities escalate.

To further support legal professionals, a document has been created to signpost regulatory guidance, helping lawyers to navigate their own responsibilities while addressing the needs of vulnerable clients effectively.

Sheena commented: “While those of us working within the Family Justice system tend to instinctively respond with empathy to the difficulties our clients face, it's important that we also ensure that we are working to the high professional and regulatory standards that we are rightly held to. It's hoped that the materials we've produced will help signpost professionals to guidance and resources that can help them navigate the best route forwards in frequently difficult situations.”
