Mishcon de Reya was delighted to host Lanre Akinola, Editor of Nurmara, the Africa news specialist, for a roundtable discussion as he launched the first Nurmara News Barometer. The Barometer is a monthly analysis of the continent's news landscape, and the main issues shaping the agenda – providing essential insight as to what's driving the news.
Lanre presented the structural landscape behind news flows across the continent, including how the major wire services dominate coverage, and how a skew towards political coverage and heavy predominance of South African, Kenyan and Nigerian news affects the news we see – and that which we don't.
Attendees discussed the causes and effects of these issues, and the impact of social media, and debated those topics that should receive more coverage.
