In a recent piece for Property Week, Mishcon de Reya Construction Partners Alexandra Clough and Justine Ayto look at a key trend in the built environment - the move towards retrofitting and repurposing buildings in a bid to reduce carbon emissions.
While there will always be some buildings where a case for demolition can be made because of the extensive and non-arguable improvements that this would ultimately achieve, in many cases retrofit is the more sustainable option, at least in the medium term. Increasingly, developers and landlords are under pressure to do the right thing in relation to climate change from multiple directions, from investors, occupiers and in many cases from their own employees.
In the context of unclear direction from Government, Alex and Justine outline some practical steps for developers to successfully navigate a retrofit project.
