The Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government has appointed Philip Freedman CBE, QC (Hon) as a member of the Commonhold Council, which has been set up to prepare the residential property market for the widespread take-up of commonhold.
The council's principal aim is to advise the Government on the implementation of a reformed commonhold regime, and to bring forward solutions to prepare homeowners and the market for commonhold in relation to a new supply of flats. Its role include raising awareness of commonhold, developing the tools and rules to enable greater homeowner-led management, and ensuring commonhold provides a workable alternative to leasehold in as many settings as possible, including for large and complex sites.
Philip, a Consultant in Mishcon de Reya's Real Estate department, is an acknowledged industry expert on many aspects of property investment and development, and was awarded a CBE in 2005 and appointed a Queen’s Counsel Honoris Causa in 2009 for his services to property law. His appointment to the Council, as a nominated representative of the Law Society, was made in April 2021 by the Rt Hon Robert Jenrick MP in his role as the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities & Local Government.
